how PUTTR works

What Is PUTTR and How Does It Work? Everything You Need to Know About the AI-Powered Smart Putting Mat

PUTTR is the world’s first AI-powered smart putting mat. It combines a premium 11-foot putting surface with computer vision technology, a companion app with 100+ games and drills, and an AI coaching system — all in a portable aluminum case.

If you’ve heard about PUTTR and want to understand exactly what it is, how it works, and whether it’s right for you, this post covers everything.

What’s in the Box

When you order PUTTR, you receive:

  • The PUTTR console: A compact aluminum case (approximately 2 x 1 x 1.5 feet) that houses the putting surface, the camera system, and the electronics. The case weighs about 12 kg total and features LED lighting around the hole.
  • An 11-foot putting mat: A high-quality putting surface that rolls at 10-11 on the stimpmeter, matching the speed of well-maintained country club greens. The mat rolls out of the console and rolls back in for storage.
  • A magnetic ball return: Four track pieces that snap together magnetically, guiding missed and made putts back toward you. The magnets are strong and the pieces are sturdy.
  • A power cable: PUTTR requires power for the camera system and LED lighting.
  • A device stand: Holds your phone or tablet at the right angle while you practice.

You use your own putter and standard golf balls. No proprietary equipment is needed.

How the Technology Works

At the front of the PUTTR console — near the hole — sits a high-speed camera. When you connect PUTTR to the companion app via Bluetooth, this camera activates and begins tracking every putt you hit.

The camera uses computer vision technology to analyze each putt’s exact path in real time. Specifically, it captures:

  • Ball speed: How fast the ball is rolling, which directly relates to distance control.
  • Ball trace: The precise line the ball traveled from strike to hole (or miss).
  • Launch angle: The initial direction the ball leaves the putter face, which reveals push/pull tendencies.
  • Entry angle: The angle at which the ball enters the hole (or the angle at which it passes the hole on a miss), showing whether you’re hitting the center of the cup or catching edges.

This data is transmitted instantly to the PUTTR app on your phone, tablet, or smart TV (via AirPlay, Chromecast, or HDMI adapter). The app displays the data in real time and compiles it into a long-term performance profile.

The 27 Putting Positions

Unlike traditional putting mats that only allow straight putts, PUTTR features 27 marked putting positions arranged in a hexagonal grid across the mat. These positions span distances from 3 to 11 feet, with three tee positions at each distance: one for a straight putt, one for a left-breaking putt, and one for a right-breaking putt.

Break is created by a physical 12-degree ramp built into the system. This means you’re reading and playing actual break — the ball genuinely curves — rather than hitting straight putts and guessing what might happen on a real green.

This variety is critical for effective practice. On the course, you rarely face the same putt twice. PUTTR’s 27 positions simulate the range of short putts you encounter in a real round, including the breaking putts that most golfers find hardest.

The PUTTR App

The app is where PUTTR’s value comes to life. It runs on iOS and Android devices, as well as smart TVs. Here’s what it includes:

Games (Free with Hardware)

PUTTR includes over 100 games, drills, and competitive modes. Some of the most popular:

  • Around the World: Make putts from all 27 positions — 189 total feet of putting.
  • Beer Pong: Drain putts to eliminate cups. A putting twist on the classic party game.
  • H.O.R.S.E.: Call your shot. If you make it, your opponent must match it.
  • Cricket: The dart game reimagined for putting.
  • Skee-Ball: Points-based putting where accuracy earns higher scores.
  • Pop-A-Shot: The basketball arcade game, translated to the green.
  • Speed: Pure pace — speed is the only thing that matters.
  • The Reducer: Simulates a smaller hole by requiring more precision to register a “make.”

These games work in solo, local multiplayer, and online multiplayer modes.

Training and Analytics (Free + Premium)

  • The Lab (PUTTR Club): Detailed technical analysis of your putting. Speed and accuracy scores for every putt, plus data on entry angle to understand your miss patterns.
  • Drills: Structured practice sequences focused on speed control, start line accuracy, breaking putts, and pressure putting.
  • Quests: Single-player progression challenges that guide you through increasingly difficult putting scenarios.
  • Profile: Your comprehensive putting dashboard. See make percentages by distance, miss tendencies (left/right, short/long), and improvement trends over time.

AI Coaching (PUTTR Club)

PUTTR Club includes AI video analysis of your putting stroke. Using your phone’s camera, the system analyzes your stance, alignment, and stroke mechanics, providing personalized feedback and drill recommendations.

You can also speak or text with PUTTR’s AI putting coach — a conversational interface that draws on more putting data than any human coach has access to, providing advice and strategy tailored to your specific stroke data.

Setup and Daily Use

First-time setup takes about 5 minutes: open the case, roll out the mat, attach the ball return, plug in the power, download the app, and pair via Bluetooth.

Every session after that takes under 2 minutes. Open, roll, plug in, open the app, and you’re in a game or drill.

Storing is equally simple. Roll up the mat, detach the ball return, close the case. The compact dimensions make it easy to store in a closet, under a bed, or in a corner.

PUTTR works on any flat, smooth surface — hardwood, tile, low-pile carpet, or indoors on a patio. It works for both left-handed and right-handed golfers (set your preference in the app), and you can mirror the app display to a TV for a bigger viewing experience.

PUTTR Club: What the Subscription Adds

The core PUTTR experience — including 100+ games, basic stat tracking, and multiplayer — requires no subscription.

PUTTR Club ($19.99/month or $199.99/year) adds premium features:

  • The Lab: Detailed speed and accuracy data for technical practice.
  • AI Video Analysis: Stroke mechanics analysis using your phone’s camera.
  • AI Putting Coach: Conversational coaching interface.
